Festo proximity sensors are especially designed and optimised for Festo drives. They detect the magnetic field of permanent magnets built into the piston of the cylinder, thus indirectly indicating the position of the piston rod.

The available range covers freely configurable proximity sensors, modular systems, and solutions for special applications such as explosion protection, acids, food, cooling lubricants, weld field, etc.

Sensors

Proximity sensorsProximity sensors are used for binary feedback of the piston position of pneumatic drives. They are sensors that detect the magnetic field of the piston magnet via a magnetic field or reed contact. They are mounted in the required switching position in the cylinder's T-slot or C-slot and output a standardised 24 V switching signal when the magnetic field of the piston is detected.The range of sensors covers all standard applications and also provides solutions for specific industry segments.The strength of the piston's magnetic field and the sensor slot geometry are not standardised in the market. Both can be freely selected by any cylinder manufacturer.Festo develops both cylinders and cylinder sensors and can therefore safely and reliably design the cylinder sensors for its own drives.

Position sensorsPosition sensors are basically position transmitters that are used universally. In addition, complex or programmable solutions are available as position sensors, and can only be used for the drives for which they have been optimised.Another product segment are encoders. They are required predominantly for servo-pneumatics and are used with certain servo-pneumatic closed-loop controllers.Position transmitters are used for the analogue feedback of the piston movement in a specific sensing range in applications such as pressing in, screwing, clamping, detecting good/reject parts etc. They are able to detect the magnetic field of the piston magnet within a wide range and evaluate it with high position accuracy. The information is provided as a standardised 0–10 V, 4–20 mA analogue signal or via IO-Link®. In addition, the devices offer programming options for the preliminary evaluation of the signal information directly in the transmitter.The strength of the piston's magnetic field and the sensor slot geometry are not standardised in the market. Pressure and vacuum sensorsPressure and vacuum sensors measure the pressure applied at the pressure input of the sensor. A pressure measuring cell integrated in the sensor is used to compare the overpressure or low pressure applied to the sensor with the prevailing ambient pressure (relative pressure measuring cell) and output it as an electric signal. A pressure or vacuum sensor often detects whether an applied low pressure is above or below a specific threshold and outputs this information as a binary, electric signal. However, the electrical output can also be provided as an analogue signal proportional to the applied pressure.
Flow meterFlow sensors measure the flow rate of liquid or gaseous media. They are used to monitor the volume or mass flow rate of a medium through a control system. Simple transmitters, so-called flow transmitters, map the physical measured variable to an electric signal. The majority of flow sensors provide digital switching outputs or even digital and analogue outputs.
Opto-electrical sensorsOpto-electrical sensors generate light (transmitter) and evaluate the reflected light in the receiver. These sensors detect objects and their characteristics, e. g. through light interruption or a change in light intensity. There are several basic principles: diffuse sensors, diffuse sensors with background suppression, retro-reflective sensors, colour sensors, distance sensors, fork light barriers etc.
Signal converterThe signal converter converts analogue signals into digital switching signals. A connection to the higher-level system is established via switching outputs or, alternatively, an IO-Link® interface. The switching outputs can be configured to monitor a threshold value, signal range or signal change.
Air gap sensorsAn air gap sensor is used for the safe and contactless distance monitoring of objects for a defined measuring nozzle geometry based on a pneumatic measuring process. The pneumatic process allows it to be used in harsh ambient conditions. The sensing range of the system is between 20 and 200 μm.
